The IRS Tax Filing Deadline is April 17, 2007

Taxpayers who have put off tax return preparation and tax return filing like it was a last minute college term paper will be elated with the news that the IRS tax filing deadline is taking a long weekend giving taxpayers extra time to prepare and file a tax return. Taxpayers can add two extra days to their tax preparation and tax filing deadline as the IRS tax filing deadline of April 15 2007 gets pushed back to a tax filing deadline of April 17, 2007. The two extra days are as good as a two dollar tax credit for feet dragging taxpayers.

The push back on the April 15th tax filing deadline to an April 17th tax filing deadline is the result of the calendar fact that April 15, 2007 is in the Sunday column on the calendar. Adding to the luck for tax procrastinators to scratch out one additional day to prepare and file tax returns is something that government officials are good at…taking a holiday. The holiday that falls on Monday April 16, 2007 is Emancipation Day. The District of Columbia observes Emancipation Day as a legal holiday, thus making it legal to file tax returns two days later than normal.

Taxpayers who take the tax filing deadline to the finish line can use online tax preparation software like TurboTax Online to file a tax return at the wire. TurboTax Online allows taxpayers to prepare a tax return and then electronically file a tax return over the internet to the IRS.

Taxpayers who are due a tax refund from the tax year 2003 will lose their claim to the 2003 tax refund when April 17, 2007 passes. There is a three year statute of limitations on claiming tax refunds. Therefore, taxpayers who did not file a tax return for 2003 need to file a tax return for 2003 to claim their tax refund from 2003.
